Common Problems of the Urethra

The urethra is a sort of passageway that allows urine to flow out of the body. In women, it is a very short tube just above the vagina. In men, it is much longer and runs through the penis, also carrying semen. There are many urethral problems that can occur because of injury, illness or aging. In the human body, many of the parts are directly connected to others. When one area stops working properly, it can affect a number of systems in the body.

Urethritis is a condition where the urethra becomes inflamed. This can be caused by bacterial and virus infections, plus a few other things. You can get the infection from a number of sources such as sexually transmitted diseases, along with contraceptive jellies and foams. Symptoms include blood in the urine or semen, a discharge, pain or itching around the area and pain with intercourse or urination. The symptoms can vary in men and women. If you have been experiencing any of these or other unusual symptoms, then see your doctor right away.

Urinary Tract Infections

These painful infections are often caused by bacteria in the urethra. Though this is a very common infection, it is truly painful. Millions of people each year see a doctor with symptoms of painful urination, cloudy or bloody urine, pelvic pain and many others. If you are pregnant, it’s important to see a doctor immediately. A urinary tract infection left untreated in a pregnant woman can cause premature labor. Your doctor will do one or more common tests to confirm the diagnosis. Antibiotics are normally used to treat a UTI.
